Delivered On Time

Arguably, the optimum length of time needed to plan a baby shower is about eight weeks. Here is our suggested schedule to help you plan a stress-free baby shower.

Weeks 8/7
Decide on the basics. Is it a women-only shower? Are children allowed? Where is the venue? What is the theme? Guest list? Be sure to check with Grandparents/Dad-to-be when creating the guest list. You may have to chase them for full names and postal addresses so get on top of this task early. Decide on your budget in week 8, and by week 7 try to have any reservations (e.g. venue) taken care of.

Weeks 6/5
In week 6 you should be ordering baby shower invitations to send out in week 5.  Order some extra invites just in case. Start pricing-up menus, baby shower favors and decorations that fit your theme and budget. If you intend to order any flowers for your baby shower, week 5 is a good time to get your instructions to the florist. Also think about what entertainment (games, music etc.) your baby shower needs.

Weeks 4/3
During week 4 your menu should be finalised and ordered. If you intend to prepare food yourself, make certain you have an unfailingly organised schedule to stick to come baby shower week. Order online baby shower gifts and party essentials during weeks 4/3.

Weeks 2/1
Confirm everything – Chase up stray RSVPs, confirm reservations with the venue, menu, flowers, cake etc. Put together games and baby shower favors in week 2 to save major headaches in week 1.

Now relax and enjoy your baby shower.

Eco-Friendly Baby Shower Ideas

Throwing an eco-friendly party need not be as confining as you may imagine. It is easy to keep your party green without giving up too much pink or blue. Start as you mean to go on, try making new parents and guests aware of how easy it can be to care for their baby the green way.

Decorations, Utensils and Food
These represent the three biggest costs for you as the host. Keep baby shower decorations simple and re-useable. Plain colours and simple patterns can easily be re-used for another party. Peruse our range of plain solid colour partyware and balloons for ideas, and have fun mixing and matching colours.

Food that can be made, stored and eaten at room temperature saves on heating/cooling using your appliances. Buffet style finger-food or locally sourced fresh food is ideal.

Send handmade postcard style baby shower invitations to negate the need for envelopes.

Gifts
Nappy cakes are a great re-usable baby shower gift idea. Our entire nappy cake range is made from eco-friendly nappies and fabrics. Recycled baby goods are great for contemporary baby showers. Have fun with the theme of recycling by asking your guests to bring along any well cared-for unwanted baby clothes, toys, bedding etc. to pass on to Mum-to-be.

Encourage guests to wrap baby shower gifts using fabric or recycled paper. Another option is to dispense with wrapping all together and simply tie a ribbon around the gift, however this rather takes the surprise out of opening them at the end of your shower.

Giving the Perfect Gift

For those tentatively creeping into the baby shower gifts section with a nervous expression, choosing a baby shower gift may not come naturally. Take a peek below at a few of our ideas to see that gift-giving does not have to be the minefield of potential etiquette gaffes you imagine.

Gifts for New Dad
Dad-to-be is going to be just as excited as Mum-to-be, so do not leave him out in the cold when it comes to fantastic gifts to remember his new babys shower. Unconventional (but useful) baby shower gift ideas for Dad include digital camera memory cards (to catch all those first baby moments), electronic photo frames and in-car mobile phone rechargers. Our Gifts for New Dad section contains a brilliant range of baby shower gifts (both practical and fun!) with Dad-to-be in mind. Choose from books (instructional and sentimental), CDs (to help Dad and baby sleep), cufflinks, paperweights, key-rings, wine stoppers, golfing gifts, memory books and a great assortment of baby-help items. Daddys Nappy Duty Belt kit is a very popular choice.

Gifts for New Mum
Firstly, be sure to keep hold of the receipt if no baby shower gift registry is provided, as very few Mums-to-be need five cribs. Although the baby shower is a celebration of a new baby, try to think outside the box when it comes to baby shower gifts especially for Mum-to-be. Some more unusual ideas include a subscription to her favourite (non-baby related) magazine or vouchers for hair and beauty sessions.

A Little Favour Goes a Long Way

Worried about essentially buying a gift for each of your guests? Well here are some thrifty ideas for baby shower favours your guests will love.

DIY
Making your own baby shower favours will probably be a time-consuming option, but can also provide your guests with the most unique, thoughtful gift. If you have the time to hand-make every baby shower favour, try to make each one unique or personalised.

Bake a Treat
Luckily, etiquette does not dictate against giving edible baby shower party favours. The key is presentation. Themed cookies, cupcakes, sweets or chocolate can provide scope for some serious creativity. Cannot make your own chocolate? Perhaps buy a baby bottle for each of your guests and fill them with little chocolates or sweets.

Sweet Scents
Scented candles, novelty soaps and bath products make cheap, cheerful and versatile baby shower favours. On that note, a variety set of mini-versions like moisturisers, perfume, dry shampoo etc. can make a useful little token of the day for your guest, whilst remaining economical for you.

Themed Treats
For the more light-hearted, novelty baby shower favours can be a lot of fun to prepare. Remember to keep your gifts fun and tasteful though rather than overly joke-like. For a Hawaiian theme, perhaps try Lei (flowery garland necklace) with a personalised starfish-shaped cookie. Perhaps a small pot of pink or glittery nail varnish with personalised pink cupcake would go down a treat at a princess themed baby shower.

Be as creative as you like.

Throwing a Superb Informal Baby Shower

Certain milestones in life are meant to create, in theory, beautiful, hassle-free memories wedding days, surprise birthday parties and baby showers. Whether this is your first or eighth baby, perhaps you feel like throwing out the Little Book of Baby Shower Etiquette and dreaming-up your own perfect baby shower. So what about tradition?

You need to sit down and sort out exactly what you do and do not want to keep. If you want to throw your own baby shower just go ahead. Be clear about what you expect from it though, and make sure your guests are kept in the know and understand the idea of a relatively etiquette-free affair. To theme or not to theme? How babyish do you actually want your theme? If you are looking for something different why not try simply choosing a favourite colour (or even a few black and white theme baby showers are not uncommon) and decking out your venue. The less-obviously discussed purpose of the baby shower is simply to receive some of the equipment necessary for life once your little bundle arrives. Babies are expensive, so do not feel bad about including a list of potential baby shower gifts or a registry with any invitations.

If you are really heading down the informal route, make it clear that the list is only for suggestions. Handwritten poems and stars named after your baby are also welcome. Remember why you are throwing a baby shower in the first place. If things get you down, take a breather, sit down and take five with your bump.

Baby Shower Ideas for Little Boys

Slugs and snails and puppy-dogs tails are what little boys are made of. Well that may be true, and the future may indeed be full of dirty footballs and mud-smeared cheeks, but for now it is your call.

Soldier Boy
A camouflage/military theme does not have to be overtly masculine. Team some plain, solid colour partyware from our baby shower decorations collection with some draped camouflage fabric. Adding cute finishing touches like animal-shaped balloons and confetti table sprinklers will soften the theme. Have fun with the invitations, perhaps something like ducks dressed as soldiers.

Sports Mad
If Dad-to-be is included in the baby shower this could make a great choice of theme. Odds are that Dad-to-be and his mates are not too enthralled by the idea of participating in the baby shower. However if a man-friendly shower is what you are after, a more neutral theme is essential. Perhaps mix this theme with a teddy bear or zoo theme. Everybody loves football-playing monkeys and elephants that drive race cars.

Babies Ahoy
This theme does not need to be all-out pirate mania. Be sure to include a few yellow duck-shape balloons amongst your buccaneers and ship-shape baby shower decorations. Pirate party hats for your guests are a must. And again, Dad-to-be can get really carried away with this theme.

Tip Top Toes
Nothing is cuter than baby feet. Take a look at one of our unique baby shower decoration themes. You will find everything you need on our website – from plates to balloons, cups to confetti in adorable themes.

Baby Shower Ideas for Little Girls

Sugar and spice and all things nice is what little girls are made of! It is difficult to pull off a themed party at the best of times, and perhaps creating a unique themed baby shower for a girl is one of the hardest. Ignoring the all-encompassing theme of pink should not be a problem. Here are some baby shower ideas to get your baby ball rolling.

Garden Fairy Magic
Green is perhaps an underused colour at the baby showers of little girls, but just take a glance at our Sweet Pea baby shower decoration collection and you will soon see why it is such a popular theme. The Sweet Pea Party Express Pack includes napkins, plates, cups, banners, table cover, baby shower balloons, confetti, and a choice of either invitations or Thank You cards with envelopes. Adorn your venue in fairy lights for a touch of extra magic. Expecting twins? Adapt this theme using our Twin 2 Peas in a Pod baby shower decorations.

Baby Pooh
Everybody loves Winnie-the-Pooh. Transform your venue into the Hundred Acre Wood for your guests to party with Pooh. Although this is not specifically a girls-only theme, if your baby shower is expecting guests of Dad-to-be as well as Mum-to-be, a more gender-neutral theme can be more successful.

My Little Princess
Shying away from over-the-top baby girl mania may not be your thing, in which case a princess theme will afford you the creativity to go mad with your glitter gun. Fun ideas include crown-shaped cookies and princess-wand party favours.

Daddys Home

Traditionally the baby shower has been a women-only affair, but the modern Dad-to-be is keen to get in on the pre-baby celebrations. Here are a few tips to make your mixed baby shower a seriously fun celebration for even the most macho of men.

1. Get Dad-to-be involved in the planning as much as possible. He needs to accurately remember the time, date, venue capacity, guest list (give him a little rein to invite his mates by word of mouth to save handing over frilly invitations), food (the promise of beer and barbeque-style food is remarkably enticing) and party activities. Make it clear that baby shower party games are optional.

2. Baby shower decorations are super-cute. But if you want the men to show up you are going to have to be mindful of completely emasculating them in a mad, pink, fluffy hell. Spots can be a great alternative to flowers, red or green a more tolerable colour palette etc. Take a look at our baby shower decorations for more adorable ideas.

3. Let Dad-to-be plan an activity or area for the baby shower. It is ok for this to be a men-only affair, but try to keep the party together as much as possible, as men in one room, women in the other does nothing for the togetherness of your shower.

4. Sugar-sweet pop music or nursery rhymes sung by Elmo go down easily with most women (pinch of salt occasionally included) but might not be so easy for Dad-to-be and his mates to swallow. Organise a mutually satisfactory set list before the baby shower.

Game Time

After the cooing and hugging is over your, baby shower is going to lose pace without a little entertainment. This is where baby shower games can come in handy. In a similar vein to kids party games, baby shower games are a great way for your guests to get to know one another. Take a little look at two of our favourite baby shower games ideas.

Baby Chain
This can be played individually or in teams. Player/team one picks a baby-related word, e.g. crib, and writes it on a board. Player/team two then has five seconds to write a baby-related word beginning with the last letter of the previous word, e.g. blanket, and so on. Make it more difficult by vetoing repeated words. If a player/team cannot think of a word they are out of the baby shower game. The winner is the last person/team still throwing out words.

Is That a Fact
This baby shower game takes a little preparation. Write down some baby/child-related facts and pop them in a bag or large envelope – make some correct and others incorrect. Include some subtle mistakes and a few completely ridiculous facts. A member from each team chooses and reads a random fact to the remaining members of the team. Reply true or false correctly and win a point. The game is over when all the baby fact notes are used. Make the game more interesting by including some real brain-busters – maybe those with kids are at an advantage on this one.

Neutral Baby Shower Themes

Perhaps you would like to know the sex of your little bundle to be a surprise on the big day, or maybe you are expecting one of each gender. Whatever the reason, throwing neutral themed baby showers should not be difficult.

Night Night Baby
This seriously cute theme can encompass a huge range of baby shower decorations: star shape baby shower balloons, sleepy teddy plates, happy moon confetti and so on. Creating a gender-neutral dreamscape for your baby shower can get an imminent father more involved too. The most popular time of day for baby shower celebrations is mid/late afternoon to early evening.  Try shutting out a little light and garnishing the room with fairy lights for a truly dreamlike atmosphere.

Little Luau
A Hawaiian theme will allow you to mix and match all the colours of the rainbow without looking overly pretty or over the top. The fact that this is also a common theme for more adult parties lends credence to the idea of a choosing a theme that is relaxing and fun to both Mums and Dads to be. Paper lanterns, decorative umbrellas, even blow-up palm trees. Take a look at our baby shower decorations section for some ideal banners and lanterns. Quick tip: Starfish shaped cookies are childs play to even the most limited of bakers.

Animal Park
Whether you transform your venue into a full-on jungle experience or stay light-hearted and perhaps slightly less gloomy (peek at our Two By Two baby shower decorations collection), an animal theme can be oodles of fun for your baby shower.
